While being a webmaster on my own website, for years I subscribed to many popular email lists singular rather than receiving digests. I used Outlook Express, FileMaker Pro and Applescript for archiving the email after I had absorbed it. While this solution worked well for me, this became impractical due to the size of the FileMaker database, as well as keeping the same localized on my machine after an extended period of time. I figured it was time to change this approach to email archival, and so enters eMail2mySql ...


What is eMail2mySql?
eMail2mySql is a straightforward php script that allows you to check email from a POP3 account, and insert that email into mySql. eMail2mySql incorporates error checking, and will format your email just as it would be when viewed in your email client.

This makes eMail2mySql particularly suited for subscribed email lists, where users may wish farm a given list for information, as opposed to subscribing to the same list with your email client and then archive all the email to your machine over a long period of time.

It should be noted that eMail2mySql is not intended to replace your existing email client, and neither can you send or reply to email with it. eMail2mySql will only check one account at a time, although you can easily rename/reconfigure to check subsequent email accounts. This script does not handle file attachments.

What do I get?
Along with the eMail2mySql script itself, the package also includes a simple but effective GUI, allowing you to view email, as well as search and delete your email too. I have added this so that you can see what the script can do for you.

eMail2mySql is normally triggered manually from your web browser, however to complete the package, I have included a 'trigger' script. This script can be included to any page so that eMail2mySql can be called automatically for you.


Features that eMail2mySql 1.1:

Direct import into mysql. No more email saved to your local machine.

Sports error checking, and during import will alert you if any email is not inserted into sql.

When eMail2mySql.php is run, it will thread all the email(s) in a simple list, making it easy to see what is imported, and what is not. It will also alert you to connection failures.

Allows you check email, but leaving them on the mail server. This is useful for setting up the script, and ensuring it is connecting to sql and your email account. Once you have things set up, you can change the config file to turn this off. [Note: if you leave this function on, you will get duplicate messages when eMail2mySql is run again!]

Nice GUI to view, edit, delete and search on records. I include this for completeness as eMail2mysql does not provide these features directly.

Makes use of a simple configuration file to make all the necessary connections to mysql and your email acct.

Includes a 'Smart Trigger" to automatically call eMail2mySql when included to your php page.
